What happens to your jewellery at the counter
The order of steps never changes. First purity — the non-contact tester is held against the metal and within seconds we know whether it is 585, 750 or gold-plated costume jewellery. Then weight, on a calibrated scale accurate to a hundredth of a gram. Only from those two numbers and the day's rate does an amount emerge. You watch both — the scale display and the tester reading — so the offer is not a black box.
From the troy ounce to the gram
Gold is quoted internationally in dollars per troy ounce, which is 31.1035 grams. It reaches Czech crowns through the USD/CZK rate. A worked example: at roughly 4,400 USD per ounce and a rate of about 21.2 CZK to the dollar, an ounce costs 93,280 CZK, which divided by 31.1035 gives approximately 3,000 CZK per gram of pure gold. That is the starting point for everything else — the figures are illustrative, and the real rate moves daily.
Converting to your item's purity
Getting from the pure metal price to a specific alloy is a simple multiplication by the gold share. For 585 that is 3,000 × 0.585 ≈ 1,755 CZK per gram; for 750 it works out at 3,000 × 0.75 = 2,250 CZK. This is why two pieces of identical weight differ in price according to their hallmark — you are not selling the jewellery, you are selling the gold inside it.

Why two rings of equal weight fetch different amounts
Weight alone does not decide. Beyond purity, what counts is what actually goes into that weight. Stones are deducted — on a diamond ring we pay for the metal and value the stone separately. So is the steel spring in a bracelet clasp, or the filling in hollow chains, which are surprisingly light for their bulk. Conversely, on exceptional pieces, signed work or antiques, collector value can exceed metal value and the offer will depart upwards from the table.
A worked example on ten grams
Say you bring in 10 g of scrap gold hallmarked 585 — a snapped chain, one odd earring and a ring nobody wears any more. At a range of 1,250–1,780 CZK/g that comes to 12,500 to 17,800 CZK, depending on where the market sits that day. Had the same 10 grams carried a 750 hallmark, the range would be 16,000 to 22,800 CZK.
